There's a sentence I hear every intake, from capable people, always delivered reasonably: "I'll join the next one. Timing's not quite right."
I understand it; I've said it about other things. But I've now watched enough intakes to report what the sentence costs, so here are two data points, shared with permission, one detail changed.
Data point one: the wait
A senior manager, call her Femi, almost joined last September. Textbook day-6 profile: brilliant, consistent, invisible one level up. She waited for a calmer quarter. The calmer quarter never arrived, because they don't; calm quarters are visible only in hindsight. She joined in spring, six months later, and she's flying now. Her own arithmetic, offered unprompted: the March window (day 38's calendar) went past unfought in between. Her words: "The wait cost more than the fee. I just couldn't see the meter running."
That's the general mechanism, and it's worth stating plainly: waiting doesn't pause your career while you decide. The lists get drafted, the windows open and close, the reorganisations land on whoever's least prepared. The meter runs either way.
Data point two: the absence of crisis
Micheal (day 27) nearly didn't join for the opposite reason: things were fine. Busy, decent reviews, no burning platform. He now says the absence of crisis is exactly why it worked, which is day 30's argument with a live subject: he built his systems while nothing was on fire. The 72-hour protocol. The live network map. The Friday rhythm. When the reorganisation hit his company in January, he was the one person on his floor with a current evidence file, a warm map and a sponsor. The role he holds now didn't exist before that reorg. "Accidentally prepared", he calls it, except the accident took twelve deliberate weeks.
Two people, same calibre, same hesitation. The only variable was when they decided, and both will tell you the later date was the expensive one.
The decision, framed properly
This isn't "act now" theatre; day 39 told you what to call that. It's the timing fact from day 38, applied to this choice: the September window is the one the first month of the cohort is built around, and the next intake is months away, on the wrong side of it. If the answer is no, no is fine, and the daily protocols are yours forever. If the answer is yes, later, be honest about what later costs, because Femi's arithmetic is the usual arithmetic.
Doors close tomorrow night. We start Sunday.
