This newsletter post is part of my 45 days series. Everyday for the next 45 days I will send an email to you. Helping you transform your work environment, get you more visible and promoted asap!

Three questions. Twenty minutes. One project.

You have a reputation, and it's making decisions on your behalf right now. Who gets the stretch project. Who's "safe". Who's "ready". You attend none of those conversations, and all of them are about you.

Most professionals manage their work daily and their reputation never. Today's protocol is the audit. Three questions, answered in writing, because thinking-about is not answering. Twenty minutes, pen out.

Question one: what would my manager say I'm brilliant at, in one sentence?

Not what you're brilliant at. What they would say. If you're unsure, that's a gap. If you're sure, run the second test: is it the right sentence? Plenty of people are impeccably known for the wrong thing. "She's great with detail" is a warm sentence that quietly caps a career at senior analyst. Compare your sentence against the identity you'd need at the next level (day 4's format). A mismatch here means your excellent reputation is aimed at the wrong target.

Question two: who above my manager could describe my work specifically?

Names, not vibes. This is the exposure audit (day 3) applied as a threshold test: if the honest answer is nobody, your reputation stops one level up, and so, mechanically, will you. Promotions are approved by specific people, and those people can only approve what they can describe.

Question three: what's the doubt about me that nobody says to my face?

You know it, roughly. Too quiet. Too spiky. Too in-the-weeds. Too safe. Great delivery, no strategy. Write it in their words, not yours, because the version that circulates is theirs. This doubt is what fills the pause when your name comes up, and it's the sentence day 9's protocol extracts formally. If you genuinely can't name it, ask someone who'll tell you the truth; everyone else can name yours.

The selection rule

Now pick the worst answer of the three and make it your only reputation project for the next four weeks. One gap, deliberately chosen, worked with visible counter-evidence in front of the people who matter.

One, not three. This is the part most people get wrong. Reputations move slowly and respond to repeated evidence (day 9's mechanism), so split attention across three fronts produces motion on none. Four weeks of concentrated counter-evidence on one front produces a change people actually register.

Why this compounds

The audit run quarterly becomes an early-warning system. Reputational drift, the slow accumulation of a "type", happens to everyone and is cheap to correct early and expensive to correct late. The senior people whose reputations seem to run themselves are mostly people who caught their drift in quarter one instead of year three.

Your assignment

Twenty minutes today: three answers, in writing, one chosen gap. Then define what counter-evidence looks like for that gap and where it needs to be seen. That's your August.

P.S. Question three is the hardest to answer alone, which is rather the point. The cohort does this work live, with a room that can see your blind spot: https://ovdlab.com/for

One small ask: If this made you think, send it to one person who’d enjoy it. Share.
