Insider machinery with a clock attached, from someone who ran the clock.
Your March promotion, announced in the spring cycle, does not get decided in March. The real calendar: September, leaders shape next year's budgets, including the promotion and pay pots (day 12's machine gets funded now). October and November, talent reviews and succession rounds produce the provisional lists, the pencilled names. Q1's formal process largely ratifies what the autumn drafted. January lobbying is asking to be added to a list that was written while you were Christmas shopping.
I watched this loop for two decades, and its saddest recurring character is the January campaigner: energised, deserving, three months late, negotiating with a finished document. Drafts move. Documents don't.
Which makes the next six weeks the most valuable career window of your year, mechanically rather than metaphorically. The September campaign, four components, all of them protocols you already hold:
Component one: arm your manager before their talent review. The calibration sentence (day 4), refreshed this month with current numbers from the evidence file (day 2). If you run exactly one component, run this one; the review is where the pencils actually touch paper.
Component two: put your intent on record before lists form. The declared-intent sentence (day 14), said now, in a 1:1, both clauses. Rooms guess conservative about silent people (day 14's mechanism), and autumn is when the guessing happens.
Component three: be current two levels up through the drafting season. Six consecutive Friday notes (day 8) between now and mid-October covers the entire window. This is not coincidence; it's the reason the habit exists.
Component four: price anything interim before review season (day 15). Walking into the autumn as permanent-in-all-but-name is a strong position exactly once: before the lists close.
The disclosure
I'll be straight about the second reason this edition runs today. My Executive Cohort starts Sunday the 7th, and it's timed to this window deliberately: the first month builds and executes each member's September campaign while the pencils are still out. If you were ever going to join an intake, the one aligned to the season is the one. Doors close Saturday night.
Your assignment
With or without the cohort: book the manager conversation for the first week of September, today. Subject line: "my year, and next year." Everything else in the campaign hangs off that meeting.
