Week 15: The Psychology of Motivation – Igniting Your Drive Every Day

Quick note: This week i've reduced my newsletter length. I got some feedback from you all that I was writing essays. :D so here's me reducing them to a meagre 600-800 per newsletter. Concise and packed with value!

It’s Tuesday morning. Are you charging ahead… or hitting snooze?

We all have days when motivation disappears, big projects drag, routine work feels dull, or burnout creeps in.

Here’s the problem: most people wait for motivation to magically appear. In reality, action creates motivation. And with the right triggers, you can switch it on anytime.

1. Start With Your “Why”

Humans work harder when we believe what we do matters. Ask yourself:

  • Who benefits from my work?
  • How does it connect to the bigger picture?

If you’re in Tech, your why might be, “I keep the company running without me, others can’t do their jobs.”

If the why isn’t obvious, dig for it. Even “boring” tasks often protect compliance, improve safety, or help colleagues make better decisions.

Pro tip: articulate a mini vision for each project “This app will save users 10 minutes a day” and remind yourself often.

2. Make Progress Visible

Harvard research shows the #1 workplace motivator isn’t money, it’s progress.

  • Break big tasks into small, finishable chunks.
  • Tick them off, move them to “Done,” or update a scoreboard.
  • Celebrate small wins to build momentum.

Keep goals in the “sweet spot” challenging enough to excite, but not impossible. Compete with yourself: “I closed 3 sales last week; I’ll aim for 4 this week.

3. Reward Yourself Now, Not Later

Future rewards (like bonuses) are too far away to keep you going. Build immediate incentives into your workflow:

  • Finish a section by noon → treat yourself to your favourite coffee.
  • Clear your inbox → take a 10-min walk outside.

Make rewards earned, not automatic. Bigger milestones? Celebrate bigger, a nice dinner, a new gadget, or public recognition on LinkedIn.

4. Use Micro-Motivation Habits

Quick boosts that work in minutes:

  • Morning priming: Write your top 3 priorities and why they matter.
  • Visualization: Picture yourself completing the task flawlessly.
  • Music: Create a “get in the zone” playlist.
  • Environment: Work where you feel most energised, café buzz or total quiet.
  • The 5-minute rule: Commit to just 5 minutes of a dreaded task. Most times, momentum will take over.

5. Turn Work Into a Game

If the task itself is uninspiring, reframe it:

  • Challenge yourself on speed, accuracy, or creativity.
  • Treat repetitive work as a skill-builder, mastering focus, detail, or efficiency.
  • Pair unpleasant tasks with something enjoyable (e.g., your favourite coffee during tax prep).

Real example: a colleague hated data entry. She reframed it as mindfulness training, added music, and set speed goals. It became a satisfying daily ritual, proof that mindset changes everything.

The Daily Motivation Formula

Why + Progress + Rewards + Habits + Game

  1. Find the deeper purpose behind what you’re doing.
  2. Break it down into visible, trackable wins.
  3. Reward yourself in the moment.
  4. Trigger motivation with small rituals.
  5. Gamify boring work.

This week’s experiment:

Pick one task you’ve been avoiding.

  • Connect it to a why.
  • Set a micro-goal.
  • Add a reward or game element.

Watch how your drive changes. Motivation isn’t luck, it’s engineered. And when you can self-generate it daily, you don’t just work harder, you work happier.

Light your own fire. Every day.

Thanks
