Five names run your next two years. The maintenance system.

A Saturday exercise, pen required.

Draw yourself in the middle of a page. Around you, write the five people with the most influence over your next two years at work. Not the five you like: the five who'll be in the room, or consulted before it, when your name comes up. Your manager. Probably your skip-level. A sponsor or potential one. And usually someone the org chart undersells: the chief of staff who frames the options, the finance partner whose eyebrow kills cases, the director everyone listens to (day 24 covers finding these).

Now audit each name on two dimensions. Last meaningful conversation: an actual exchange, not co-attendance at a meeting. And their current goal: one sentence on what this person is trying to achieve this year.

When I run this with coaching clients, the modal answers are "months ago" and "no idea". Sit with that combination: people work forty hours a week for their future and zero minutes on the humans who'll decide it.

The objection, handled first

"This feels political." Here is the operational truth: these five people are making decisions about you whether or not you have a relationship with them. Abstaining doesn't make the process purer. It makes your file thinner, and thin files get conservative verdicts (day 14). The choice was never politics versus no politics. It's informed deciders versus uninformed ones, and you're choosing every week by default.

The maintenance system

One touch per name per month. A touch is small: a useful update on something they care about, a question about their priorities, a heads-up they'd value, a four-line broadcast (day 6) that's relevant to their world. Four sentences. This is a rhythm, not a campaign, and rhythm is the point: frequency builds familiarity (day 3), and familiarity is what gets drawn on in the room.

Lead with their goals, not yours. You wrote down what each person is trying to achieve; if you couldn't, that's your first conversation, and "what's the priority for your area this half?" is a perfectly normal question. People advocate for people who make their objectives easier, and knowing the objective is the entry requirement.

Watch the cold-drift signal. Three months of silence with any name means your next touch happens this week. Relationships with deciders decay quietly, and the decay is invisible until the moment you need the relationship, which is the worst possible moment to discover it.

Why this compounds

The map converts relationship-building from vague ("network more") to operational (five names, one touch each, monthly). Run for a year, it means every person with power over your trajectory has current knowledge of your work and direction at any moment a decision arises. Decisions arise unpredictably (day 38 shows the calendar's hidden windows). The map is how you're permanently ready for them.

Your assignment

Draw the map, run the two-dimension audit, send one touch today. Twenty minutes total. Then put the monthly rhythm somewhere it survives (day 36 gives it a permanent home).

P.S. The OVD Lab's network mapping tool runs this as a living system, cold-drift alerts included. Members praise it more than anything else we've built: https://ovdlab.com/for

One small ask: If this made you think, send it to one person who’d enjoy it. Share.
